2.0 out of 5 starsNothing SpecialFebruary 6, 2013
By Ruby

I purchased this vacuum because I wanted something better quality for my house that had an attached hose to do corners and cobwebs. The biggest problem is that the hose is very stiff and each time you use it the vacuum falls over. You have to hold on to the vacuum and hose at the same time. So if you are considering this vacuum because of the hose forget it. The other big problem is wrapping the cord when you are done vacuuming. All better vacuums have an upper hook and a lower hook so you can just loop the cord around. This only has the upper hook which makes wrapping the cord back on a chore. It is light weight and easy to push around. It also does not take up much closet room. However, unless this vacuum has an exeptionally long life span it is not worth the money. I would not buy again.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat for work or homeJanuary 30, 2013
By Pen Name

It's a excellent vacuum for most tasks. I work as a janitor and use it in large 3000 square feet clinics and it picks up everything but large chunks of paper or paper clips. It outperforms professional equipment that cost $600 to purchase. This model has many great attachments that come in handy for cleaning many situations. I use the small motor brush to get fine hard to get hair from chairs that have fabric that isn't very easy to clean. For the home it's great for getting pretty much anything and everything. The only really big downsize is the power cord length is kinda short.

1.0 out of 5 starsPoor designFebruary 22, 2008
By Parent of 3

The saleswoman at my Best Buy store recommended this vacuum to me based on the previous Panasonic that they used to stock. I guess she figured that if the old one was so wonderful this new one mush be as well.I got it home and there were a few things that I really liked. The fact that it automatically adjusted for different carpet heights, the retractable cord and the fact that it said the dirt cup was anti-static so as to release the dirt easier when emptying. What I soon found out was that this vacuum has quite a few short comings. It is very top heavy. When standing up on carpet, the slightest touch will make it tumble backwards. The retractable cord which I was excited about ended up being rather short. I was not even able to vacuum my entire (average size) master bedroom without having to unplug it to finish. The lights that are supposed to tell you if they floor is clean or dirty are annoying and I think really just a gimmick. The turbo brush is really in an awkward spot on the handle and while pushing the vacuum in the reclined position, the hose continually falls out of the grove meant to hold it.I finally decided to return it and purchase a Healthy Home. To my surprise, it turned out that the Panasonic really wasn't even working to well. I was able to vacuum my whole house and the dirt cut was about 1/2 full. They next day when I used the Healthy Home, I had to empty it after only doing my family room.Bottom line, Don't bother with this Panasonic.

5.0 out of 5 starsBagged Stick VacJune 2, 2008
By Reckless Consumer

*Note that the same model is available on Amazon for a different price, I'm not sure why.*The only difference between the S163 and S168 is the HEPA filter on the S168...I found it was significantly cheaper to buy the S163 and add the HEPA filer purchased separately. It is extremely difficult to find a bagged stick vac. For those of us with allergies (or just aversion to dust) "bagless" vacuums are not attractive. Dumping the dust bin re-releases lots of junk (especially the smallest, lightest particles) back into the air.I bought the Miele S163 simply because it was the only bagged stick vac I could find several years ago. I am thrilled with it. It has very strong suction and rolls easily across our hardwood floors. It does not blow or push around crumbs like many other vacuums, it actually picks them up on the first pass. The chamber is sealed and after several years of use the inside of the vac is literally like new, every speck of dust has been trapped in the bag or filter.Because I only use mine on hard floors, I find I don't have to change the bag more often than our large canister vac (which we use for carpets). Even very dirty hard floors don't generate nearly as much "waste" as carpets, and I generally change the S163 bag every month, even though it's usually not full. I have a cat and two Cheerio-eating children and use the vac at least once per day.Bottom line: this vacuum has kept my kitchen floor crumb-free for several years and shows no sign of quitting anytime soon.

The price via amazon was 33% lower than the competive website. ( A central vacuum specialty retailer website.) Also, it included a belt when the competitor did not include a belt. The product arrived exactly how it was advertised. My previous unit lasted 4 years. I expect this unit to last 4 years also. The beater bar over time will "egg out" its housing and can't be repaired. Be aware powerheads don't last forever. Also, it's advisable to purchase a couple extra belts to have on hand just in case. To get to amazon, click through the adam carolla website.

5.0 out of 5 starsGood price for a lot of bagsJuly 10, 2012

I know that Kirby recommends that you purchase their brand of bags for the Kirby sweeper. However, they are expensive. I use the larger size bags, and you can only fill them up so far anyway, and it seems like a waste of bag. I change my sweeper bag once a month. These seem to do the job, even though they are the smaller size.

4.0 out of 5 starsdecent vacFebruary 8, 2013

this particular vacuum works decently. i liked that it is made here in the usa. it is durable for the most part. however, the hose and attachments are made of plastic completely. it isn't the quietest vac when in use, but that isn't a deal breaker for me. when i ordered this vac i thought that the powerhead was included but that wasn't the case. i contacted the seller immediately and they emailled me and said they would send me the powerhead but that hasn't happened as of yet. i am not sure that this model is made for a powerhead anyway. i plan on contacting the seller again. i still will keep this as a second vac.

4.0 out of 5 starsDirty Grout SlayerJuly 24, 2011
By robshady

I live in a house with 2500 square feet of tile. After years of watching my white grout slowly fade to shades of gray, it was time to invest in something more effective and industrial than my mop and bucket. It's easy to clean tiles, but so far nothing was effective against my dirty grout. I had a carpet cleaning company quote me 50 cents a square foot to clean all the tiles/grout in the house. The Viva E40 checks in at $900 shipped, a discount over my $1250 cleaning quote. Buying a steamer was an easy choice.I debated over several different steam cleaning machines. The choice to select a Reliable Enviromate product was the result of a phone call I made to their headquarters. Confused about which of their four core steamers to buy, I placed a call to ask about the differences. They were so helpful and informative that I felt comfortable with them as a company. Definitely someone who I'd like to do business with. The Viva E40 was the most expensive of the four I reviewed, but the commercial grade components, 5 year warranty, and continuous steam technology (never have to truly stop when cleaning to wait for a boiler to cool down) made the difference.Out of the box, it took 10 minutes of instruction reading to get started. Everything hooked up easily and I was off and running. My first test was using the wand wrapped in a cleaning towel on the tile floors. With little effort, the steamer broke through sticky, dirty spots to leave a gleaming, clean floor. Did I mention you only need water, no chemicals? Next up was the grout. After a few minutes I realized it made sense to clean the grout first. I attached the nylon brush to the steamer tip and dug in. Holy crap, the dirt and grime started beading away from the grout. Charcoal colored grout suddenly transformed to the chalky white I remember from years ago. In fact, so much dirt and grime pooled to either side that I was constantly following the steamer with a rag to wipe up the nastiness (lest it reset in the grout). I then finished the floor with the steam wand.I switched the from the nylon brush tip to the brass tip that came with the steamer. This was even more effective. With a little pressure application, I was ripping through the dirty grout twice as fast as before. Sadly, after several hours of this, the brass tip wore down to a nub and was useless. I then switches to the steel brush tip. This was as effective as the brass, but seemed to strip away the enamel from the tile. Based on that experience, I'd recommend using the brass tip on grout for best results.Anxious to clean more, I am stuck waiting on an order of brass tips from Reliable Corp. And they're not cheap. I ordered four more tips at $10 each, plus $21 shipping (they're in Canada). Also, the cleaner comes with only two towels for the steam wand. Extra towels are $4 each from Reliable, which I think is silly. I ordered a pack of commercial bar towels from Amazon and hope that'll do the trick (25 pack for $27). You'll want to change these regularly. It took me six hours to clean about 800 square feet of tile, and it wore me out. Keep in mind I'm catching up on years worth of dirt and grime. It's going to take me another 12 hours of cleaning to get the rest of the house, but with results like this I don't mind. I have no regrets thus far about purchasing this steamer.

4.0 out of 5 starsCarpet sweeperJune 18, 2011
By George Erdosh
Amazon Verified Purchase

This carpet sweeper does an excellent job picking up any small dirt, lint, cat hair, whatever, both from bare floor and carpet. It is very easy to use and clean. However, I downgraded it to 4* because the poor handle design. The handle arrived in the shipment in four sections and they telescope together to form one long handle. No matter how hard I squeezed the sections together, they eventually loosen up and fall apart. I had to glue them together with superglue. Very inconvenient. If you don't mind the gluing job, I recommend this sweeper.

5.0 out of 5 starsBest vacuum we have had - two years and runningOctober 25, 2012
By RatherLiveInKeyWest

Hands down the best vacuum in this price range that we have ever had. Two active middle school kids, one Jeep crazy, woods lov'in, living life outdoors family, and a crazy golden retriever that just turned 3 years old... yessir, we generate a lot of dirt and dog hair, but this vacuum sucks it all up.We have had this for about two years now and it is going strong, and our son has asthma so we vacuum the house a couple times per week. The amount of junk it picks up is amazing... actually it is a little scary when you think about it... and we have medium pile wall to wall upstairs with hardwood downstairs. One thing is for sure, we use it so much that we have to change the HEPA filter about every other month, and at about $12/each that can add a bit to the cost. Thankfully, the primary filter is rinse-able so we have only had to replace it once and just wash it the other times. Yes, we do try to keep it clean and well maintained, but maybe that pays off because we have never had a clog or any issue with poor suction or function. The hose and its attachments also work well on our stairs and in the cracks and crevices of our furniture. The retractable cord is just outstanding - it really works well. The canister is easy to take out and dump, and we wash it out with soap and warm water every couple months too. When ours finally kicks the bucket, we will get another one just like it. Hopefully it will be on sale.If you need and want a vacuum in this price range, seriously -- go for it.
