I have to say, I've been watching this tech for a long time. Unfortunately, given my line of work, I know enough about how this stuff works to be skeptical...I say its unfortunate, since (at least in this instance) I was dead wrong. My wife impulse bought one at Costco for about 200$, at that price my resistance began to crumble. The setup was pretty much nonexistent, the quickstart covered everything pertinent and the manual outlined enough about advanced functions to send me to amazon looking for lighthouses.72 hours later, I will say that (unless it catches fire or eats my baby) my house won't be without one again. What I loved:Scheduling (take the last of the effort out of it why don't you?)Effectiveness, we have 4 inside cats, a rottweiler/boxer and a pomeranian. The pom is the only one that doesn't shed profusely, and I can't find any hair in the two rooms I've granted the 552 access to, or for that matter the kitty litter the cats track around.Sturdiness-Holy &#!^!! Yesterday, I was demoing my new little buddy for a coworker and his 4 year old daughter jumped on it, then promptly fell on her butt on top of it. It turned around and started cleaning in the opposite direction. I can't find a scratch on it.Charming... Ok, fine I said it, I got attached to the little thing and have been caught speaking to it like a small child whenI found it in a room it wasn't supposed to be in.Smart; when its cleaning the kitchen 90% of that room is out of LOS of the dock, it has found its way back to the dock 3/3 nights where I had it run unattended. What I could do without:The "function" is flawless, but it's beeping will wake the dead when it leaves the dock or goes back home. I'm a hard sleeper and the beeping woke me up. The normal function, once its done beeping is much quieter than any traditional vacuum I've used. The "dock" is the only part that doesn't seem terribly well engineered. Its sturdy enough, but about every 5th start, the roomba will hook a hard left coming out of the dock, knocking it sideways and making it impossible for the little guy to find his way home. The accessories don't showcase this little machine's effectiveness very well. I'd like to have gotten a lighthouse and a wall, or even 2 lighthouse/walls. As it is, I have it restricted to the living room and the kitchen so it can find its way back to the dock. While it does well with shoelaces, tassels, small dog toys and the like, the pull cords from venetian blinds will stop it in its tracks every time and don't provide enough resistance to shut it down or trigger an error, so it will try to get away and keep bouncing off the end of the cord while winding itself tighter and tighter, until it gets one edge far enough off the floor to trip the tilt sensors. In summary, I've cleaned the bin every morning since we got it (I set it to run at 4am) and I have yet to clean the brushes, in spite of emptying at least a pound of animal hair (in total) from the bin since we got it. I am now padding around my living room barefoot again, and I can't see anything it missed. I've read a lot of reviews about other roomba models needing frequent brush cleaning, but ours has vacuumed my living room and kitchen 7 times now (3 nights and 4 showing off for friends) and it doesn't seem to need cleaning. Since I clean the beater bar on my cannister vacuum every other time I use it, I'd call that a victory and then some.So far it's proven effective at long and short, coarse and fine animal hair, kitty litter, dog food crumbs, a rubber cap from my electronic cigarettes, and plenty of dust and dirt. I'm looking forward to the arrival of my lighthouses so I can turn the little guy loose on the rest of the house.BTW; I fixed the docking issue with a piece of the double-sided tape that comes with the removable wall hooks from 3m, now the hard left it pulls occasionally just makes the roomba jump sideways a bit and the dock stays in place.
